‘Social Action through the Art of Hip Hop’ is the theme of the 2014 Sankofa Lecture Series, the only conference in the Colorado region that situates the study of Hip Hop culture as a site of cultural literacy, identity formation, and tool for innovative and effective teaching practices. This year’s keynote address will be provided by members of the group Dead Prez, “revolutionary Hip Hop artists with a ‘gangsta’ lean.”
The event theme is derived from the idea that a redeeming quality of rap music is that it provides the most vulnerable with a blueprint for how to engage socio-political ideas, debate and action. To that end, the next installment of the Sankofa Lecture Series will emphasize the various contexts in which Hip Hop culture is used to address, impact, and create social change in our society. To further demonstrate this point several organizations and businesses from the Denver community have graciously agreed to participate in the Sankofa Community Resource Fair. This forum will provide attendees with access to a myriad of resources that foster holistic health, community engagement, and political agency.
