Join Denver’s premiere GLBT organizations, businesses and leaders for a provocative evening featuring a free reception and the screening of the documentary Gay Revolt with filmmaker Jerry Gerash.
Before Denver became home to one of the largest PrideFest’s in the county, passed Civil Unions and other critical law to protect the GLBT community, homophobia and discrimination was rampant in the Mile High City. There were illegal roundups, police brutality and unrelenting discrimination from city hall and the police all under the guise of Denver’s “Lewd Ordinance” and three other city laws.
Fed up and tired of living in fear, five courageous gay advocates organized the Gay Coalition of Denver and worked for ten months to organize the first GLBT hearing and teach-in ever at city hall.
On October 23, 1973, more than 300 united gays and lesbians showed up at city hall, risking their jobs, housing and safety, to denounce the heinous discrimination. Their trailblazing efforts lad to the repeal of four city ordinances, the first in the country – Lewd Act, Loitering for Sexual Deviant Purposes, Renting a Room for Sexual Deviant Purposes and Anti-Drag law, which is documented in the film Gay Revolt. With other quick victories of the Gay Coalition, thousands came out of their closets and a powerful gay community was born, and so began the long struggle for total gay liberation and civil rights.
After the film, Jerry Gerash will participate in a Q/A session with all attendees. Space is limited so please get your tickets today at http://www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=25826.
