Voted Best Gay Bar in Denver
Denver's old standard, be sure to stop here on your trip. Also, the next season of the Real World is currently filming in Denver and the gay boy from the cast is working here as a barback, so you might see those MTV cameras around.

I find it very odd that "the best gay bar in Denver" offers no dancing. Other than that the staff is generally nice (even to women) and the crowd is decently friendly. Drink prices are fairly cheap, but it can definitely get crowded on a Thursday night. Most people love it, but I would suggest checking it out for yourself. In all honesty, it would be nice to see some more women out there.

First of all, if you're quiet and shy...JR's is not for you. I've read some of the reviews and was pretty disappointed to hear what some had to say. I am a regular at this bar (the bartenders have a drink waiting) and everyone is very friendly. A bar will be a bar: you have to make it fun. We all know that. So, if you're not really a "big crowd" kinda person - don't come here. I've been to both JR's in Dallas and Houston...and yes, the JR's here is a bit smaller. But the ambiance and atmosphere is the same. If you want a small little hole-in-the-wall place...go somewhere else; because yes, JR's is alot.
But most gays and lesbians like alot.
In addition, I've noticed that JR's draws a surprisingly nice straight crowd during happy hour: from 5 - 7 or so...because the drinks are SO cheap. It's not ALL straight...but alot of straight people go there around happy-hour time. But after 8 the straights pretty much clear out and the gays/lesbians flock in. The older gay/lesbian crowd (40+) normally come in alot earlier (from 5 PM to 9 PM) and the younger crowd (21-35ish) hits around 9 PM or so.
I also just wanted to throw in that, over the past couple years, JR's is slowly starting to draw a surprisingly large female (gay/straight - I can't tell) crowd. [Frustrating for the gays, I guess.]
It's busy every night of the week! EVERY night. Surprisingly, JR's does the most business (according to liquor sales) of ANY bar in ALL of Denver. It's a popular place. Even if it doesn't sound like your type of bar...you should try it once (or twice) if you're here in Denver.

I've been to JR's a few times. The place always draws a good crowd and the drinks are reasonably priced. Most people seem to arrive in small groups with their friends. But, everyone mixes well and has fun.

I've been to JR's several times because it seems to be where all the guys hangout. It is busy, no doubt. I've never been happy with the place, fluctuating drink prices depending on the bartendar, to cramped and they never open the up stairs, and the young obnoxious guys. I recently went to the JRs in Houston, and now it's hard to come back to Denver JRs. Thats a great bar, lots of room, outgoing and down to earth staff, an outdoor patio. It reminded me of the old Grand. I miss the old days.

During my extended stay in Denver I heard this was THE PLACE TO GO on a Thursday. I don't understand. YES the place was packed with people...a very mixed men/women's crowd... One thing that completely annoyed me was that there was an inordinate number of women who were extremely loud, drunk and obnoxious....I saw at least 5 of them break glasses in their drunken stupor. The help...not great... waited at least 10 minutes in line while they talked with their friends... the guys in general seemed to be of two types... 30 something "Guppies" exuding an air more of self-importance than kindness or young "twink boy" types who like to point at other people and say "Oh look at HER!" Not THE PLACE to go unless you want to be seen in a place where everyone else wants to be seen. Pass.
